I found this ex-library hardcover in this Little Free Library in Nashua NH while dropping off some books of my own. It's by the author of the charming and incredibly harrowing When the Wind Blows.

This book has a mix of funny/creepy/thought-provoking elements, as a boy finds his life changed by the appearance of a tiny, hairy man in his room one night. The boy is startled but willing to help the man acquire some clothing, food, and shelter, but the increasing demands from his new guest make the boy begin to wonder what's really going on. The man presents some awkward choices - he clearly needs assistance but is also independent and touchy, unwilling to be treated like a toy or a pet while continuing to make demands that start to get the boy in trouble with his folks. Could be seen as a wacky fairytale or a bit of a lesson in boundaries and a willingness to be open to new experiences... Not sure I'd have enjoyed it if I read it as a child, but I found it quite intriguing from an adult point of view.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the book, with some entertaining tidbits.]
