The reader begins this book exactly the same as Thomas (the lead character) does. We are both thrust into an alien place, which has it's own strange language (almost English, but not quite), confused but desperately needing to find out what's going on! So you become Thomas's shadow, following him around trying to interpret the strange surroundings into something that makes sense, but the more you learn - the stranger it gets! What I liked about this book was the mystery of it all. But I can't read it as a stand alone novel and be happy, because it ends weird. They escape, but it's not really over and there are still too many questions left unanswered. So I had to order the next one to find out where its all going...
