One of my favourite books of all time, and would have been a worthy winner for the BBC 'Big Read" held recently. I love the way Faulks introduces seemingly incidental observations which one later realises are fundamental components of the story. Truly brings home the horror of trench warfare.
Release planned for Saturday, July 17, 2004 at BCUK 2004 Unconvention @ Apres Bar, Summerrow in Birmingham, England Controlled Releases.

One of many many many books that I caught at the National Meet in Birmingham today - thanks for organising it Steve! This was on my wishlist.
I have finally got round to reading this! It is a vivid depiction of the Great War and how it affected the people who experienced it and their descendents. My copy did not have a blurb, so I didn't really know what to expect - i only had what I remembered of William Hague's presentation about it on the BBC Big Read programme in 2003 (not a lot!) - so I was expecting more of it to be set between 1914-18. The fact that only about half of the book took place in this period really added to the poignancy of the story. There is the idea that life goes on, and that lives were wasted in needless slaughter in the war. It is a very touching book and made me think a lot. I will now pass it on to katweeble.

I finally finished this on Sunday evening. I found it very moving, and sat and thought about the war and my families part in it afterwards. It made me think about going to the war cemetaries some time. I was quite nervous about reading this and did not expect to like it - I am so pleased that I have read it. It also taught me about the mining operations in the first world war - I had not heard about them before.
