I enjoyed the animated mini-series, and was pleased to find that there's a graphic-novel adaptation. I picked up Volume One of the adaptation - and also this original book, a kind of sequel/interquel (depending on how you interpret the timeline). While it will be more fun for those who've seen the anime or read the books, I think it stands alone pretty well.
The premise here is that half-brothers Wirt and Greg have escaped from the mysterious lands "over the garden wall" and are safely home again - but talking bluebird Beatrice is still with them, and they have to find a way to get her back to her human family on the other side. But wait - things seem... a little weird...
As with the main series, this one has nice touches about the troubles of young love, teen angst, sibling annoyances, and more. There's an eerie shout-out to King's The Shining (which, I admit, made me laugh - but it really is creepy), and nods to other sources as well, but the whole thing has its own dark/sweet/intriguing tone. (And some potential nightmare fuel, as in the panels that reveal where Greg and Wirt really are!)
[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits.]

I'm putting this book in the Manga and Graphic Novel bookbox (bookbox journal here). Hope someone enjoys it!

I chose this book from the box because as I flipped through the pages to glimpse the artwork I came across the page where Greg walks into his parents' room and his dad is dressed as a gorilla and is kissing his mommy. Poor Greg leaves screaming from the room! It was too hilarious to pass up!
And it was super fun and cute with really nice artwork. I haven't seen the animated series, but I could imagine the story in this book as a single episode. You feel like you're starting the book in the middle of another story but it's still easy to read it as a stand-alone and be able to understand the story and world.
