In a new, expanded edition of a best-selling Ocean classic, Castro describes a historic political partnership that changed the face of Cuba and Latin America. He vividly portrays Che--the man, the revolutionary, and the thinker--recounting in detail his last days with Che in Cuba, giving a remarkably frank assessment of the Bolivian mission.

Fidel Castro, in an unusually gentle, quite emotional mood, remarks, "For me it has been hard to accept the idea that Che is dead. I have dreamed of him often, that I spoke with him, that he was alive . . ." Includes Castro's speech on the return of Che's remains to Cuba in 1997.

'I started reading this book knowing nothing about Cuba, Che and very little about communism really, certainly I've read nothing from a viewpoint that communism is good and mostly I have heard of its excesses, weaknesses and failing. I have always suspected that communism is a fantastic idea, however human nature gets in the way of its success and warps it somehow, something I see happening. This book is an unapologetic book on communism and anti colonialism. It is also an honest book, talking about having to do "rectification" to resolve areas where communism was not working and correct these. A key part of these issues were what we would probably describe as corruption and I don't think anyone capitalist country would dare to say they were free of this. What is important is they appear to have recognised this and taken steps to correct these. It may be that Cuba has got communism right.

However, I did struggle with the emphasis on gerrilla warfare, especially when they were talking about Ziare as I have read accounts from that period where "rebels" have slaughtered white people (and black people too) . I also had missionary friends who talked about escaping the rebels during the troubles and barely escaping with their lives. These are people who were caring for the people of Zaire, providing much needed medical care. So this doesn't sit well.

It is however good to be challenged and to read things that challenge your prejudices and knowledge and this book has certainly done this.

How spooky!!! This was on my wishlist!! However I've looked through and there are a few that seem to be missing. Like yourself I know very little about Che Guevara but feel I should know more. So this was a lovely surprise, thank you :)
