This was a very sweet kid's story about a Mexican street dog who is adopted by a little American girl who is struggling with the culture shock of moving to a new country. It mixes a sci-fi element (Faith building a lard-and-chili-pepper-powered rocketship) in with some softly presented exploration of real-life conflicts around the human tendency to resist change and unfairly blame others. A major plot thread is Faith learning not only to accept, but to enjoy her new home and the people she knows there, and stand up for them when faced with racist sentiment from another character.

The whole tale is told from the POV of Edison, the dog, which is not a new format, but the author takes nice advantage of the fact that the reader already has to suspend disbelief to trust that a dog is telling the story, and uses his earnest, simple voice, combining important words (as determined by a canine perspective) from other languages and some simple illustrations to create an impressively compelling tale. The wry comedy of Edison's excited, sincere descriptions of both everyday events and unbelievable adventures made me grin.

Caught at the BC in DC meetup. I'm a dog lover so I'm going to give this a read and then place in my Little Free Library.
