Gideon, a star playing the violin, isn't able to play any longer. He was at a concert and had suddenly forgotten everything about playing. In writing down what he can remember he tries to get back to playing. Then his mother is killed in a hit and run and as this is not the only death which seems linked to the past of Gideons family Inspector Lynley starts investigatin.

This was the book I liked least of all the Inspector Lynley stories I read by now. The shifting between Gideons memories and the current events were quite irritating and in the end I ended up wondering when what had happened. In the beginning we get to know Gideons mother was killed but near the end he wants to meet her? The book was more a psychologic study than a real crime story. For me it was too much memory than real action.
