I got this hardcover at a local thrift shop, for another release copy.
Between the many adaptations and parodies of this story, it can be difficult to keep the original in mind, but I found the book both enjoyable and frightening; it includes some sequences that haven't made it into many of the film adaptations and are nightmarish in the extreme. (The battle where the torpedo ram ship Thunder Child takes on one of the invaders is especially awesome.)
Among the many homages, I especially enjoyed War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches, an anthology where each story is by a different author and is from the viewpoint of a different historical or fictional character - great fun.
[The TV Tropes page for comments on the book as well as links to more comments on different adaptations. Of the film adaptations, the 1953 film is a sentimental favorite of mine as it was the first one I saw; it's not as faithful to the book as some adaptations, but it has its points!]
