The Ice Balloon
3 journalers for this copy...
I got this ex-library hardcover from Better World Books for another release copy. I've read several books about Andree and his expedition, including Andrée's Story, and this one's an interesting addition.
I found this book intriguing, not merely for the capable account of that fascinating and tragic expedition, its loss, and the discovery of the remains some thirty years after the balloon first drifted out of site, but also for the many entries about other arctic expeditions, not all of which I'd heard of before. The trials experienced by those lost in the Arctic were often appalling, and in many cases I found it hard to believe that those who survived could possibly have done so...
I was surprised at the number of polar explorers whose paths crossed, sometimes in the most remote of locations - and occasionally at the perfect time to save someone's life.
Fascinating account!
[For a more personal look at the expedition - still fact-based and scientific, but woven with excerpts from the personal letters of the expedition members and the loved ones they left behind - see Bea Uusma's The Expedition.]

I'm taking this to BCer Iddylu at our mini-meet. (This is the one I was telling you about, concerning the attempt to reach the North Pole via hot-air balloon.) Enjoy!
Thank you! Reserving to take on an upcoming trip.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I plan to leave this book somewhere in Qeqertarsuaq! Of course, I'm not there yet, but I won't have internet when I am there so I'm making my release notes ahead of time. Once I'm home, I'll add more details about the release location and a picture.
