After the world and his wife had read this and forgotten it again, I got my hands on a copy and then left it on the shelf for another year without reading it, simply because much hyped books never turn out to be as good as they're painted. Then I discovered the film starring Julia Roberts was on Netflix and I had an evening to my self, with none of my family wanting to watch one of the neverending stream of superhero / Die Hard / action movies. And so it was that I watched the film before I read the book because I trust Julia Roberts to act in stories I want to watch. I was not disappointed, even if she did remain improbably slim in Italy and improbably unsweaty in India and Indonesia. Immediately afterwards, I read the book at last and loved that, too, inevitably picturing la Roberts as Ms Gilbert. I hadn't expected to enjoy the book so much, so was pleasantly surprised. The only part that really annoyed me was the holier-than-thou mystical part that is undoubtedly the point for many people who read it. I'm glad she found the love of her life, at least for as long as it lasted. In real life, she moved on again in an unexpected direction, then had her heart broken by tragedy. Life is not always as cut and dried as it is in a novel, or the movie of a novel.

Took this book with me to Berlin for our book exchange box in front of our house. We run this box since last summer and several neighbours came to exchange their books, to donate books or even to participate and tell, what a good idea this is. Well, we also found nice books in it, to read them by ourselves. And now we support the box with some new stuff originally from the Convention :)
