I was delighted to find this good-condition hardcover at a local Salvation Army thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy. (I'm never sure how to categorize Gorey's works - Art? Children's? Humor? This one's bizarre enough that "Horror" might be best, if only to put the squeamish on their guard!)
This is Gorey's classic abecedarian work [he did lots of other entertaining ones, but this one's hard to beat], from "A is for Amy who fell down the stairs" through "Z is for Zillah who drank too much gin". The illustrations add to the fun, with the last couplet illustrated by a little girl in a barren garret about to knock back a tumbler full of gin, as her little doll - whose head is a skull - sits nearby...
Yes, it's gruesome, and grim, and dark, and all that. If you don't get why this is so charming, you're not going to be an Edward Gorey fan. [My favorite "letter" would be "N is for Neville who died of ennui," though that's by far the most benign fatality in the book!]
My goal is to memorize the entire list; so far I can't get beyond "B" (Basil, assaulted by bears), but I'm working on it.
[There's a TV Tropes page on Gorey and his work, with some entertaining tidbits.]

I'm taking this to BCer Iddylu at our mini-meet. Enjoy!
Thank you!
