I got this softcover at a local Salvation Army thrift shop. It's about a teenaged lesbian in the 1960s who is institutionalized for being herself - and who gradually forges a friendship with another patient. There's a lot of anguish here, for the young runaway's troubles as well as those of other patients, and the look at institutional life is often very painful. It seems that our heroine leaves the story stronger than she entered it, but some of the lessons she's come away with are pretty sad in themselves...
