I got this paperback from a local Salvation Army thrift shop, for another release copy.
I read this ages ago, and enjoyed it very much, especially the descriptions of the old west; I lived in Wyoming for some years, so the territory was familiar. It's in Michener's usual sweeping-historical-saga style, with loads of characters and with plot lines that weave together over time; ecological concerns, race relations, and a nifty murder mystery mingle with the history and romance.
The book was adapted to a mini-series in the late '70s, with some very effective performances. There's a TV Tropes page on the series with some entertaining tidbits.
