I got this hefty hardcover at a local Goodwill thrift shop. I'd read the novel ages ago and enjoyed it, in part for the variety of characters - including some rather chilling ones - and the massive amount of culture clash. The 1980 mini-series adaptation was decent, though some of the impact of the characters' inner thoughts and motives was lost.
[There's a TV Tropes page on Clavell's "Asian Saga", of which this is the first book.]

"I do love secondhand books that open to the page some previous owner read oftenest. The day Hazlitt came, he opened to 'I hate to read new books,' and I hollered 'Comrade!' to whoever owned it before me."
