I loved this book! Beautiful stories of the lives of Ruth, her mother and grandmother, both in China and USA. Misunderstandings and sorrow, but also happiness.

A writer who has never disappointed me, and one that I haven't read yet. Onto the pile it goes!

Ruth is taking care of her mother who is showing signs of dementia. She seems to get her age and dates muddled. Delving into the past, Ruth discovers the truth about her ancestry and follows the journey of her mother and grandmother.
I felt some affinity with Ruth who is an editor, sometimes ghostwriter, who puts into words how it feels to work on a writer's text and likes to call herself a book doctor, which is a good expression, less pretentious than wordsmith and more descriptive than just editor. There is this notion of healing, which runs in her bones, one might say... Also the healing of her love relationship with a man called Art. And a background of inkmaking in China, and calligraphy, and Peking man.
