This book claims to be about loneliness and isolation. To me it is about a mental case and about trauma therapy. Eleanor Oliphant is completely nuts, we can see that immediately. Her unworldliness and lacking self esteem reminded me at first of Bridget Jones, however, Eleanor has deep traumas and (literally) scars from mistreatment back in childhood, her weirdness certainly has reasons. I wonder why she waited 30 years to come to terms with her past, but anyway, this is the story of her miraculous recovering from a depressive, alcoholic, schizophrenic social cripple into a happy, loved, committed woman with a future. A feel well story.
But the whole plot struck me as somehow heavily contrived. The violent boyfriend, dear heavens, an asshole directly from nightmare assortment, the terrorising phone calls of "Mummy", the Bikini wax ... it's all a tad too much, too exaggerated. One could come to think that Eleonore is a born maochist; I couldn't quite associate with her. I also don't believe in Amnesia, except as a result of a physically damaged brain. But luckily, Eleonore is (often unvoluntarily) funny, she made me giggle several times.

I guess this book appeals to all who are interested in pyscho therapy, who like the tale of the ugly duckling and a happy end.

I was very much looking forward to reading this book that was recommended to me multiple times, not last by K. I guess it was my high expectations that left me with a feeling of "is that all there is about this book?". I agree with a lot that spy-there wrote (though I believe that amnesia as a way of coping exists). I think if I had read the book expecting some entertaining novel I would have been more surprised and would talk better about it now. Having expected something more "literary" I am a little disappointed.

Will travel with a surprise package to another bookcrosser. I am really curious what you make of it as K. really loved it and I not so much. Well, it's not bad but I wouldn't sing hymns about it.
