From Amazon:

When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age. You is a compulsively readable page-turner that’s being compared to Gone Girl, American Psycho, and Stephen King’s Misery.

When I was given this book, my friend said everybody is awful in it. She wasn't kidding. You see 'Beck' the object of Joe's obsessiveness through his sick lens, and while he claims to love her, he doesn't much like her. And while I don't like to find myself agreeing with a delusional, creepy, stalker/serial killer; he's right. Beck is shallow, superficial, vain, manipulative, egotistical; but all this pales beside a self deceptive, stalker, killer. The scariest thing about this book; is the idea that someone so insane, so sick, so hateful, would be walking around looking and behaving like a normal person. It's Joe's outward appearance of normality that freaked me out. We've all met some frightening people, but usually the antennae goes up, and says 'get away from this person'. Joe manages to pull the wool over everybody's eyes. Beck, her friends, his employees, his therapist; no one figures out he's bat shit crazy until it is way too late. This was a fast and furious read and I enjoyed the ride.

There are some odd little subplots in the book that are just briefly mentioned and I wonder whether the follow up book reveals more about them. Joe's rotten childhood and the fact his employer; one of the few people Joe actually seems to care for, locked him in a cage for days/weeks, because Joe was careless and 'let' a valuable book get stolen. Joe looks back at this incident as something he deserved and proof of Mr. Mooney's caring for him. I suppose this was to show how desperate Joe was for any kind of attention, even if was being put in a giant bird cage.
