Listened to him in the radio enough, interesting to read a book of his

I enjoyed this rather more than I thought. It is meticulous in its detail of life in a Cumbrian town post war. You can smell the back alleys and the damp, the polish of Grace's house, the wool of the clothes. The demand for the new council houses is an interesting side to the novel and how the communities would be changing and the anxiety and excitement that would create. Sometimes it slows a little in pace but that might just reflect how Sam is coping with civvie life-almost as if his breath is stifled and we just don't know what's going to happen. The ending for me wasn't right..the build up should have kept going..but then the title is the return. A good solid read.
