The focus of Truly Madly Guilty is a Sunday afternoon barbecue in the posh suburbs where something happens – something really bad. The three couples who attend the barbecue bemoan the role they played that day and wish – how they wish – they never went in the first place. Crucially, the nature of the actual event is initially withheld from the reader, a device Moriarty successfully employed in Big Little Lies. The chapters take us to the months, days, hours, and seconds even, before and after the incident. Moriarty is brilliant at her craft, all the time cranking up the suspense.
