From the inside cover flap:"As the Nazis' relentless bombs fall during the Blitz of Coventry, six-year-old Rose Sherbourne finds herself orphaned and under the guardianship of a Cornish farmer's daughter, Elenor Cardew. Elenor knows that the only way to protect spirited Rose is to leave the city and make a new life for themselves away from harm. But soon Elenor discovers that Hitler's firestorm is not the only thing she must fear when she learns a devastating secret about Rose . . ."

Finished reading this book today. It kept my interest however I felt the depth of the characters was shallow and some characters came across as being stereotypes for specific characteristics that didn't ring true. There are other authors who have written historical fiction related to World War II that I find more believable and where I have also learned more information related to history . . . this book, not so much. But there was an interesting story line overall.

The title "The Secret Orphan" refers to the character Rose. However, I find that a bit deceiving since the story turned out to be mostly about Elenor, Rose's guardian. The plot line about the secret orphan does not appear until over half way through the book, although there are small hints earlier about some intrigue. It was a story that did hold my interest. However, whenever there was a critical event or interaction, it resolved very quickly and became anti-climatic. Although I did enjoy this story, such as it was, I don't think that I would pursue reading more books by this author.
