'Found in Toronto at my fave bookstore: BMV. How could I resist - with a title like that? (And, I really liked "The Sportswriter" - published in 1986.)

This is a very heavy story and in parts a bit of a slog to read. Ford writes with agonizing detail and minutaie.

Dell is a young boy who is living a basic, although poor, life with his parents and twin sister when his father gets an idea to rob a bank and drags his mother into his scheme.

From that point on, Dell and Berner's (his twin sister) lives completely change. Dell has a better fortune. His life isn't easy but he is given some good advice the woman who helped him escapt to his new life, "accept things, don't think too deeply on anything and take what comes at you". It's basically the Serenity prayer in simple terms,

" God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference."

Dell has some extraordinary experiences in his life but it's that advice that saves his sanity and allows to him to move on in his life and put his past behind him.
