Garstang's specialty was invertebrate developmental biology; these verses were written, "...not merely to amuse fellow scientists but also to illustrate some of the controversies of invertebrate evolutionary biology". They really do help some of the ideas stick; I wish I'd known about this book when I took invert zoo as an undergrad, instead of being told of it in grad school.
