Sunny skies, sleep water... and a sinister corpse

Flavia is spending her summer punting along the river with her reluctant family. Languishing in boredom, she drags a hand in the water, and catches her fingers in the open mouth of a drowned corpse.

Brought to shore, the dead man is found to be dressed in blue silk with ribbons at the knee, and wearing a single red ballet slipper.

Flavia needs to put her super-sleuthing skills to the test to investigate the murder of three gossips in the local church, and to keep her sisters out of danger. But what could possibly connect the son of an executed killer, a far too canny police constable, a travelling circus, and the publican's mysteriously talented wife?

An Orion paperback 2018

I bought this Flavia book already on 3 November 2018 for 12,90 euros – an amount of money I really rarely pay for a book.. For Flavia I can obviously make exceptions :D I'll probably keep it in my permanent collection but now at first it'll go to Delenna for a couple of purposes ;)

Flavia is the best!
Thank you for the Wishlist book!
It is so nice to meet Flavia again. The first book was the best because many things were very much like they were in my childhood.

Flavia saw and heard? hurdy-gurdy near the circus. She did not say if she loved it. I do. I have seen the instrument being played at Medieval festivals. This picture was taken at The Medieval Festival in Turku 2019.

Oxford and even St. Hilda´s College were mentioned. That is just the place were Bookcrossing Convention 2015 was arranged. I was there with my husband and some friends. It was great! St. Hilda´s College is situated by the River Cherwell.

The book contains a lot of literary talk about things which are partly unknown to me. It did not bother me, but I understand if some readers are not happy with it.

At Oxford I learned about punts and punting. Both were mentioned in the book. We saw punts and punting but did not try it.

I did not follow all the chemical formulas even if I am interested. Now the story line was more interesting. This book felt more like a novel for older readers. And still Flavia is only 12 years old. The writer told us more about Dodger than before. It pleased me enormously.

Picked this up from the meet-up, because I could not remember if I already had a copy at home.

This book has gone into hiding and I'm reading the Finnish translation. Fortum & Mason's picnic hamper mentioned... Their boutique on Piccadilly is one of my favourite London sights, what an eye-candy!

Idle day on a river mentioned. I do like idle boating.

Journal Entry 17 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Tuesday, September 19, 2023
Some sailors are also quite decorative.

"One of our fine universities wasn't far."

Flavia has never made an autopsy on a fish, but I have. We had comperative anatomy as a part of veterinary nurse's studies. We opened a fish, a frog, a rat and a pidgeon. I didn't learn anything which I would still remember, so I guess it wasn't very important..

Consumption mentioned. John Keats died of it in 1821. I have visited his house museum in Hampstead, London, several times. I even attended his 215th birthday in 2010, organized by the Friends of John Keats. There were three of his original lady friends, serving the leftovers of his last birthday cake - you would have needed a hammer to break pieces of it. Lovely old dears.

I, too, have a microscope. Here is a flea's head, also mentioned in the text.

Covent Garden mentioned.

Dickens mentioned. Visited his house museum in London in 2019.

Journal Entry 24 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, September 20, 2023
Van Gogh mentioned. Last year I visited the courtyard of his mental hospital in Arles where he painted this famous painting (pic).

Journal Entry 25 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, September 20, 2023
Land's End, Cornwall, mentioned. According to the picture, I've been there five years and one day ago!

Poor posture mentioned. "Bent by culture."

Pic: Perhaps it's hereditary.

I've also visited old churches around the UK and once a cathedral. I stopped walking and gazing the ceiling, walls and painted glass window. Dropped my eyes and noticed I was standing on Jane Austen of all people (pic)!

Journal Entry 28 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Friday, September 22, 2023
A hat like a bird's wing mentioned, looking as if it had been forcebly pulled from a duck. Reminds me of a hat seen at Purdey's, London (pic). Purdey is a very posh gun shop, if the reader of these lines happens to come from the ranks of the less fortunate.

Journal Entry 29 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Friday, September 22, 2023
London's theatre history mentioned. Musicals are my favourite, but when I heard that Agatha Christie's A wittness for the prosecution was played at the old court house, I absolutely wanted to see it. A perfect setting for that play (pic). Also The railway children played at the never-used continental railway station built under the xxx station is a play not easy to forget, especially for its surroundings - a station which had cost millions, which had had everything ready, even all the kiosks were there with they signs up - and then the Channel Tunnel was opened and changed everything. A perfect but costly example of one hand not knowing what the other was doing. Well, at least a little theatre group from Yorkshire realized what a perfect setting the ghost station would be for their play. Unfortunately I have no pictures from there.

One just simply can't pass Oscar Wilde when speaking of London's theatre history...

Journal Entry 31 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Friday, September 22, 2023
And I could not pass the chance of seeing Jeremy Irons live on stage! For that I had to endure a most boring classic: A long day's journey into night. I think I have mentioned that in general I don't like classics or anything loved by critics. Sooo boring. If I want to hear a marriage drama of an alcoholic I just mute my radio in Lauttasaari. But it was still a thrill to see Jeremy!

Damnation. A long text was wiped away, will start again after a wee sleep.
Will tell how putting a book on its belly was one of the mortal sins in our household, too. I've since walked on the wild side and sinned with some BC-books, if a bookmark hasn't been available (pic).
Madame Bovary mentioned. One of my much hated classics. It began by describing a hat for eleven or so pages. Stopped reading there. Phoned teacher and asked if I could invent an author and write the parts of the "classic" I was going to read to the class. Got an ok. Inventing the biographical stuff about the author was easy, wrtiting the classic not so. I tried several versions on my mother and she always told it was too entertaining. Finally, when everything of fun or interest was removed from the text Mom gave her blessing: "Now it is a classic." I gave the talk and read the pieces to my yawning classmates. One claimed to have read the book and two said having read something by the same author. At the end of the lesson the cat was let out of the basket.

Finished. Old graveyards are interesting places. Annelis and I even found the first known bookcrosser's tomb from Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh (Pic).

I often jump over acknowlegments, but this time I glimpsed through them and found out that the late Bill Bryson was Alan Bradley's cousin. Although "cousin" the in the English language can be used rather loosely, it can be first, second or even third cousin.
