A new city / new series start - however, this is really a continuation of the larger overall story arc as there is plenty of cross-over characters from Baltimore and other locales. I liked that I was a little familiar with some of the landmarks and areas in this one as I've been to Sacramento multiple times over the past few years while my daughter and her husband lived out there in an area not far from some of the action described here (Placerville, Folsom, Granite Bay).

Daisy - sister of Taylor (from the Baltimore series) - has settled in the Sacramento area after she cut short her European trip when she discovered her father was surreptitiously having her followed (for her own safety). She's living in an apartment owned by long-time family friends, Karl & Irina Sokolov. She's working as a DJ and volunteering and just generally getting on with her life. She's handling her anxiety with the assistance of a therapy dog and she's staying sober with the help of her friend, Trish. When Daisy and Trish split up after a meeting and dinner and a walk, Daisy hears noises and turns to confront what she thinks is another well-meaning bodyguard. She's attacked and gets away, barely, but in the confusion has a necklace that quickly draws in Gideon, an FBI agent with a personal connection.

It's a sad story, even the serial killer was in many ways a tragic character. The themes - child abuse, pedophilia, cults - are dark and disturbing, and likely we will see more of the hunt for the bad guys involved here. This arc has more to explore - more bad guys and more interesting characters for the main story. This was an insta-love (it's almost the author's go-to position) but it did not detract from the overall story and the romance was well integrated into the action.

Quote I loved:

I'll be here when you wake up in the morning. [Is there anything nicer to hear? Especially when you're not feeling well...]

I have to admit, that while I like this genre, it hasn't been my favorite recently. So, in an effort to clear out some of the overflow from my book shelves I will be sending this book out into the world unread. I hope it finds a more appreciative reader.
