Vernon God Little: A 21st Century Comedy in the Presence of Death
9 journalers for this copy...
Fifteen-year-old Vernon Gregory Little is in trouble. And it has something to do with the recent massacre of sixteen students at his high school.
This book is brilliant. Hilarious in parts, incredibly dark and tragic in others. And very topical, not only dealing with what could possibly drive a fifteen year old boy to such lengths, but the disturbing phenomenon of trial by media and focuses on those who will stop at nothing, even invention, to get “the story”.
I can’t say yet if it deserved to win the Booker Prize as I have not yet read the other short listed books, but they would have to be something very special to beat this.

that was incredibly fast- thank you!!
i really liked this one... so descriptive! and so on target in the way of the nose diving voyeurism (among a bevy of other things, not least, materialism) of american society. i will admit, i felt a little weird laughing my way through it, but, like, whatever....
thanks for the opportunity to read this, ShadowPi :)
i believe VGL should stay 'in the family', so i'm waiting for a learning as to who to send it to....

I've recieved this book.
Received in the mail today. Great timing - I finished another bookring book last night! Starting this one today.
After really wanting to read this book, I'm sorry to say that I don't like it and I can't finish it. The profanity is the major reason. I've PM'd Lizanne for her address so that I can pass on the book.
Thanks for offering this book out on a bookring - I appreciate the opportunity to try it.

As I make this entry I realize that I have had this book forever. I have even had the next person's address forever. There was simply one passage that had me put the book down.
But I have finished. I am VERY glad to have. Sometimes I missed the funny. Sometime I was a bit 'put off' by some things.
But I did really enjoyed this book. The last 1/3 of the book had me hooked.
Thanks for sharing this book. And an apolgy to those following me for the wait. I hadn't realized it was simply too long!!

I am afraid that i didnt get on with this at all. I didnt find it funny and the profanity was un-necessary. I am not a prude and dont mind bad language, but this seemed excessive to me. Sorry!

Caught safely in my post box today, and heaved onto the TBR pile. I think it is number 3 on the list. Thanks all.
Update: 09 June
I'm afraid real life has interfered big time since this arrived, so thanks for your patience everyone. I'll be onto it soon hopefully.

What a great book! Truly bizarre in parts, very funny most of the time, poignant at the same time, and also makes you think. In my opinion the bad language was not excessive ~ teenage boys in certain cultures and social stratas really do talk like that, and after all it was Vernon telling his story. I'm sure that in the barbecue sauce capital of central Texas the teenage boys would talk like that. Those of you who gave up in the first half of the book because of it, have unfortunately missed the best half.
I note that the book has skipped a number of people on the list. felicia-fairy has a copy already, and I am PMing EDDI to see if she wants to read it. Failing that I shall definitely find a good home for it.

Will be sending on to EDDI tomorrow.
Received in the mail on Tuesday. Thanks. Is there anyone else waiting? If not I will read a few other books first (library etc)
Oh my goodness, how embarrassing! I was looking for a book in my bookcase and discovered that I still have this book after 9 months. I am terribly sorry! I didn't realise I still had it and will pm the next in line immediately. Please forgive me!
