The children go back to Rome, where it is rumoured Jonathan is still alive. The action centres around the (then brand new) amphitheatre, now known as the Colosseum. Lots of interesting, and I think well-researched, historical detail, but credibility is strained when the Emperor again gets himself involved in the children's affairs yet again.
I'm not sure that Lawrence's world building is up to such a along series, but this book is redeemed by the dilemmas that Nubia and Lupus must face, and Titus's discussion of justice, which should give readers plenty to think about.
