A book that I recently acquired for the purposes of giving it away.

I picked this up on a whim and got a few chuckles out of it, and some interesting trivia tidbits.

A collection of bizarre demises with minimalistic illustrations. Very interesting, very strange. And sometimes surprisingly funny.

Okay, this intrigued me, and it looks like I can breeze through it quickly, so I brought it home with me from today's BC-in-DC meeting.

I can't help wondering if GoryDetails has ever seen this...it seems like something that would be right in her wheelhouse.

Breeze through it quickly, indeed. I think it took me all of 5 minutes once I actually picked it up. There are certainly unusual ways to die, and some of them were darkly comic, but many felt a bit apocryphal. It would be interesting to have a little more detail or context for many of them. Even so, this was interesting, for what it was.

I was delighted to find this book in today's mail - in part for the contributions from several BCinDCers, and in part because as ResQgeek imagined, it's right up my alley! Thanks so much!

Journal Entry 11 by wingGoryDetailswing at Nashua, New Hampshire USA on Wednesday, October 2, 2019
I really enjoyed this little book, from the marvelously simple yet evocative artwork to the individual anecdotes. Some of the entries were new to me, a pleasant surprise given how many "bizarre death" books I've read! Among the more intriguing and/or satisfying: Sigurd the Mighty, a 9th-century Viking alleged to have died from infection caused by the tooth of his enemy's severed head; the American man who was amusing himself by shooting a huge saguaro cactus only to meet a "don't mess with Mother Nature" fate when an arm of the cactus fell on him; and the 16th-century Austrian who failed to escape a fire when he tripped over his own extremely-long beard. And then there's that poor deer, which spends most of the book fleeing from a hunter only to lose in the final panel...

Entries I'd heard of before include the Great Molasses Flood in Boston in 1919 (see Dark Tide for more on that), and the poignant, ghostly fates of the Collyer brothers in 1947 New York (the non-fiction Ghosty Men covers their story, as does the novel Homer & Langley.)

Thanks again for sharing this one!
