Took it from the book buffet at the BookCrossing Anniversary Convention in Mainz.
Update, 31 May 2019: I absolutely loved reading this book! A true masterpiece! Apart from the suspense I was held in while following the various events which brought the Meridiths, Pius Mulvey, Mary Duane and Grantley Dixon together on the "Star of the Sea", this book taught me what the Great Irish Famine really was about. It's been all figures and history so far, but I never was able to grasp the fact how fundamentally Irish society changed due to it, during that time and after, and how easily this tragedy could have been relieved or even avoided. I'll keep a sharp lookout for Joseph O'Connor and his literary work in the future!

Picked up at today‘s meetup after a recommendation by Susammelsurium.
"In the bitter winter of 1847, from an Ireland torn by injustice and natural disaster, the Star of the Sea sets sail for New York. On board are hundreds of fleeing refugees. Among them are a maidservant with a devastating secret, bankrupt Lord Merridith and his family, an aspiring novelist and a maker of revolutionary ballads, all braving the Atlantic in search of a new home. Each is connected more deeply than they can possibly know. But a camouflaged killer is stalking the decks, hungry for the vengeance that will bring absolution."
I liked the set up of the book, with the story being told from different angles. Interesting to read that: even in 1847 there was allegedly criticism of the "unelected House of Lords" in England - just like today; how England brought hardship on Ireland - just like today, yet again. And that maybe with pressure from the decendants of those fleeing the famine, Ireland can escape the yoke of English colonialism...
