Back says: "On a desert mesa, surrounded by vast Indian reservations, stands Los Alamos, the most secret military installation of World War Two. Four men have crossed the barbed-wire fence through Stallion Gate to select the test site for the first atomic bomb. They are Oppenheimer, the physicist; Groves, the General; Fuchs, the spy. The fourth man is their guide, Sergeant Joe Peña, an Indian and a fighter. As Washington exerts pressure o the soldiers and scientists to accelerate the programme that will give the U.S. a nuclear weapon, the Indians, with their powers of second sight, put pressure on their man Joe Peña to sabotage the weapon he is guarding. How will he and the girl he loves, Anna Weiss, a scientist on the project, measure up to these conflicting challenges?
Stallion Gate is a powerful novel of love and betrayal - a story about the ten seconds that opens the Nuclear Age."

The novel read more like a biography of Joe, with bits and pieces of his past, than of the story above. And I felt the ending wasn't really an ending - it left it hanging.
