"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."

Sheri Tepper is one of my long-time favorite authors. There may be one or two of her books I have not gotten to yet.

Tepper writes science fiction that explores religion, relationships, societal culture, and government. This book is two stories in one, and is about a really interesting and chilling future Earth. Future Earth is post-apocalyptic and suffering under the rule of an oppressive Regime. The existence of magic is a given in the story. A very small number of old folks are the secret keepers of knowledge of science and technology from before the time of the cataclysm. A being called the "Visitor" is on the move and is expected to wreak even more havoc than was caused long ago. This story is a page-turner, intriguing and powerful. Tepper is at her best in world-building and character development.

A wandering book -- the karma of literature!
