Reading this book reminds me of my little parrot who sadly passed away last year. My bird may be smaller than the hawk's head (though I won't doubt my little Wall-e would have charged the giant opponent if face to face). Just like small dogs, the little fellows have no clue what their actual sizes are and it amazes me they aren't extinct for their suicidal behavior.

Yes, the sizes may differ but some bird antics are the same. But even putting my personal sentiments aside, this is an excellent read. It's not just a story about a woman training her bird. It's about a daughter mourning her father, an avid reader rediscovering a book, a child's fascination with hawks, a human being's captivation with nature. All these themes weave together beautifully in the hands of this talented writer.

Reserved for Boekentrol who has this on her wishlist. Enjoy!!

What to say about this book? Not quite sure how to put into words what this book stirred in me.
First of all, I liked reading about Helen training her hawk. I gave been fascinated by birds of prey, don't know much about them, but they fascinate me. Their flight, abilities and their looks, just amazing.
The parts about Helen grieving the loss of her father are also interesting, in a way I can relate to what she describes.

But then the parts about white and his hawk, well... They were hard to plough through for me. I just couldn't relate. I more or less get why they are in the book, but for me they made the whole quite hard to read.
So in the end, it's form 2/3 a thumbs up, the other 1/3 not.

And even though I would have wanted to like it more, I'm happy to have read it, to get confirmation that there are more people in the world that have a fascination for something and then act upon it when they're grown up.
