I bought this - the first of a series - the second ('Moon over Soho') popped up as a book group choice. It looks like an odd crime/supernatural hybrid set in modern-day London ... well, let's see!

(08/03/19) This is the first book of an extensive fantasy-crime-horror series, thank you to a book group friend for introducing me :) The book group choice was actually the second book 'Moon Over Soho' - but why start there!

*Includes spoiler*
This book explores the dark meta-physical and fantastical underworld of modern London through the efforts of a special Metropolitan Police group that exists solely to investigate the 'special' and unusual. New detective Peter Grant is co-opted into this group as apprentice to the enigmatic master Thomas Nightingale after talking to a ghost at a gruesome murder scene in Covent Garden. The central plot is about Punch (spoiler), theatrical murders, and undead actors ... but there are also vampires and the ancient Gods of London's lost rivers of the title in a turf battle between Mother and Father Thames.

During all this Peter is learning his craft, guided somewhat by Newton's 'artes magici' - who knew! This has settled quickly into a pattern very nicely indeed; irreverent, funny, with some gruesomeness and adult themes - what's not to like?!
