Received this arc copy from Books & Puppets in Easton-they have a free arc bookshelf.

I generally liked the book, world and characters, though I’m a little tired of the each chapter is a different POV thing that a lot of books are doing nowadays. I liked that it has Phoenix riders, and the the rulers are generally Matriarchal-I don’t think either are big things in most fantasy worlds. Other than the info dumps I thought the book was a bit tedious and had to stop several times to do something else.

First in series. Pretty intense in some areas. The relationship between the 2 sisters had you wondering why the oldest was so protective/manipulative. Knew something was up... lol
It was a pretty good read. Can't wait for the next book.

The book arrived! Two days! That was super quick! Can't wait to dive in!

I really enjoyed this book! I do agree with AlterEgoZoe that there were quite some lengthy info dumps. It got to the point where I started skimming and/or skipping them.

I love the characters and the world that Preto created with the Phoenixes and magic. Though, I do wish that not all non-magical users were the 'baddies'. Well, that's not technically true...there are good/helpful non-animages but none of them are main characters.

This is an ARC so it needs a once over with a proofreader and an editor.

I know how Veronyka enters the group is how the author wanted the plot to go, but the reasoning for Cassian setting up that restriction is sooo flimsy! So flimsy, in fact, that the author has the characters acknowledge it!
Once the final book is done, I hope the author will be steered to finding a better way to handle it (and the info dumps in a better way...or at least not being so repetitive with then). Then, the book will be truly supernova!

All-in-all, I really enjoyed the book and couldn't wait to read more. I will definitely keep my eye out for book 2 when it gets published!
