I got this ex-library softcover from Better World Books, and was pleased to assign it this Nice Round Number (15400000) as its BCID - and to make it the 15,000th book I've registered on BookCrossing!

This is an interesting children's book about the Amazon rain forest and about the conflicts between the indigenous people and their shamanic traditions of using plants for medicine, and the outside world's refined medicines. At first the young boy who's the center of the story is downcast that the "strangers" have medicines that work better than those of the shaman - until another visitor doing studies of local plant life explains that the powerful medicine came from the same plants used in traditional medicine. The story faces issues of new religion vs. old, as well - lightly, but it's still not something that generally comes up in children's books in a fairly balanced manner. And the illustrations - especially on the end-papers - are stunning, highlighting the vast variety of plants in the rain forests, and the risk of losing them due to global deforestation and climate change.

So, yeah, some heavy topics, but presented simply and clearly. Good book!
