I felt a sense of sadness for these women as I read this book. Each are incarcerated by their own doing - some for inconceivable crimes, I could not help but think of their circumstances and how their children suffered because of their choices. Alliances are formed among the women where stereotypes continue, and the weak struggle to endure. Rachel Kushner has a talent for writing, I realized how this story is pretty rough. It is a life so different than mine.
When the story begins, Romy, the protagonist, is on a prison bus headed to prison. This sets the stage for how bleak things are going to get as she is in for one brutal two life sentences with no parole. Romy when she meets a prison teacher who takes note of her interest and feeds her curiosity with great books. This prison teacher takes note of her interest and feeds her curiosity with great books. Many of the things he does is illegal and could get him into a lot of trouble. There is also the side story of Doc, a crooked cop, who killed people.
