While some authors keep repeating the same formula (which became stale), their characters remained stagnant and failed to grow, or the impact they were once able to shock and surprise you with had disappeared from their writing, Iles has stayed fresh.
Greg Iles continues to provide intelligent and well-researched stories that are grounded in the history of the Deep South. Mr.Iles talks about the problems of the Deep South; the history of slavery, the Ku Klux Klan, the inequality of races, as well as other issues.
This is the last of the Trilogy, but it could be a stand-alone novel not requiring the reading of the previous two books in the trilogy. It would be best to read these books in order for a greater understanding of the characters and events.
Greg Iles is a great story teller and though I liked his characterization, The acceptance and integration of Serenity seemed out of place in the events that had been happening. The way he jumped into bed with her when Caitlin wasn’t yet cold in the ground bothered me. I also found parts of the plot and characters behaviors to be a bit too unbelievable. Mississippi Blood leaves some loose ends e.g what happened to Keisha’s brothers? Have we really seen the last of Snake? What about Tom?
That being said,, I couldn’t put the book down.

Thanks Jan so much for sending me this wishlist book! I've read the first 2 books in the Penn Cage series and have the next 3 on my TBR stacks so I was wishing for this one to complete the series. Not sure when I'll get to it (since I need to read the others first) but will be looking forward to it.
