This book was donated by the Nashua Public Library for distribution to the local Little Free Libraries. It was the (very loose) inspiration for a 2006 film.

I've read enough about food-production to be familiar with most of the issues raised in this book, but I found it to be a good representation of those issues, from factory farming to "McJobs" to global health concerns.

My favorite part of the book was the "Have It Your Way" chapter, which suggested ways to combat "fast food nation", both on a personal-consumer level and in community/nation/globe levels. "The first step towards meaningful change: stop buying it."

Other recommended food-related reading:

Michael Pollan's books appeal to me, including Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food.

Then there's Mary Roach's Gulp, which is about the biological processes of eating and digestion more than the source of the food, though that comes into play in some chapters.

Oh, and I want to add a nod to Oranges by John McPhee, which goes into detail about the orange-growing industry - demonstrating that meat-production isn't the only questionable aspect of large-scale farming.

I'm lucky enough to live in an area with lots of local farms and farm stands, and where the supermarkets include local produce, dairy, and meat too. And I have space to do some gardening at home, for the absolute best farm-to-table options {wry grin}. This book reminded me not to take all that for granted.
