Bought for 10 cents at a Flohmarkt.

An excellent book! I would not have expected this book to be so good, because the cover and blurb are quite uninspiring and do not, I think, suit the book very well.

This is the story of an archdeacon who, after the death of his "perfect" wife becomes attracted to an entirely different woman. However, this is just a symptom of what is really going on inside him and we follow what happens to him in the year that follows and how things in his life begin to change and get out of control. The psychological and religious study of what is going on is the main point of the story (both sides dealt with very well, and of course both seen through the eyes of the people who practise them), and at times it is completely unexpected and even exciting!

The writer seems to be skilled in seeing things from other peoples' points of view, and the Neville at the beginning comes across quite differently to the Neville at the end.

I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series.
