A lesson before dying is set in a small town in Louisiana in the late 1940s. Jefferson, a young uneducated black man, is sentenced to death for a murder which he did not commit. Grant Wiggins has returned to the town from his university studies to work as a teacher at the black school, but feels there is little he can do to help the black community. His aunt and Jeffersons godmother persuade him to visit Jefferson in prison on order to teach him about pride and dignity. It is not an easy task, as neither Jefferson nor Grant seem able to work out how to deal with their separate and different fates.
