Inspector Singh is home - and how he wishes he wasn't. His wife nags him at breakfast and his superiors are whiling away their time by giving him his usual 'you're a disgrace to the force' lecture. Fortunately for Singh, there is no rest for the wicked when he is called out to the murder of a senior partner at an international law firm, clubbed to death at his desk.

Unfortunately for Singh, there is no shortage of suspects - from the victim's fellow partners to his wife and ex-wife - or motives, as many of the lawyers have secrets they would kill to protect. And very soon Singh finds himself heading up an investigation that rips apart the fabric of Singapore society and exposes the rotten core beneath. Perhaps coming home wasn't such a good idea, after all...?

As usual an entertaining plot with interesting characters. I loved the introduction of Fong as a sidekick. Can’t wait for the next stop on my Asian Tour -Cambodia!

Having read previous Inspector Singh books I just had to pick this one out straight away from the bookbox. You may even get two readers in this house!

Ahha, one reader down and the next has asked for this one so it is now with Mr Flutterbies9!

Not too long on tbr for this.and well appreciated it has been too. I was reading this in tandem with 'The Tattooist of Auschwitz' but it did not deflect from enjoying this storyline, in fact it counterpointed the very human observation of character in each book. I've read the previous two from this series and so was looking forward to this gentle but unusual crime story and having just checked I see that there are currently another four in this series (if I can ever find them!).

The various layers in this crime are cunningly exposed one by one and (as per the previous in the series) the acute observation of human behaviour is well observed. Unfortunately, Inspector Singh seems to keep these acute observations to his 'solving a crime' sphere and not in his own relationships with either family or colleagues! casting him in the role of 'misunderstood misfit' with all and sundry. However, the very layers are each interesting as each has its relevance and implications explained in terms of the society in which Inspector Singh is moving to solve the crime from the wife and ex-wife to the very junior partner in the law firm.

It was a tangle to get the denouement of this book and (for me) one of the weaker of all the motives throughout that brought the increasing number of murders to a close in a sudden rush in the last few chapters. However, I did enjoy this book and have duly passed it to the next reader.

and the next reader has duly read this and finished it. He thought that this book was not quite as strong as the earlier books but he nonetheless enjoyed it and completed it very quickly. He liked the introduction of Fong and the progression of Inspector Singh himself.

Looking forward to the next one - if we ever find it that is!

No plans for this book as yet so it will go on available for now.
