Purchased at Miami's library book sale a few years ago.
Fadi and his family was trying to flee Afghanistan when life under the Taliban became intolerable. However, during their escape, a terrible accident happened. The family finally made it to San Francisco, and tried to adjust to the new life, as each member was burdened with guilt and pain.
This book packed a lot of background stories, weaving in news and daily lives of the immigrants. The ending definitely makes me think "insha'Allah", fate works in mysterious ways indeed. There are many arcs that can be expanded and developed, but I like how the author keeps it short and sweet, and allow us to imagine Fadi's life going on, not perfect, not without hardship, but he will survive, grow and learn from it.
