I got this hardcover at Barnes and Noble. It's the 8th book in the "Flavia de Luce" series about a precocious and bloody-minded girl (12 as of this book) coping with family issues and the occasional crime. The series began with The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie.

This one opens with Flavia in a really bad situation - which only gets worse as she mentally goes through the "how we got here" part of the story: she'd been sent to a boarding school in Canada in a previous book, but got herself thrown out so she could come home. But on arrival she finds that her father's very ill, possibly a result of the horrors he endured in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. And as if that wasn't enough, the family had to eat her beloved hen Esmeralda. And no sooner has she regained a little of her usual equilibrium than she goes on an errand to deliver a message - and finds the intended recipient hanging from a door...

The tone of this one got so dark so fast that I can't say I enjoyed it - and the conclusion isn't really any more upbeat. And all this centers on a 12-year-old, however precocious. Kinda rough! [She also gets some factoids wrong about cats, one of them a clue to her solution to the crime, which irked me unreasonably.] So, perhaps not the best in the series.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits.]
