I got this ex-library hardcover from a Goodwill thrift shop, for another release copy.

I first "read" this book via audio download from Audible.com - I'd selected it mainly because one of the readers, Simon Vance, is on my "audio readers to watch" list, and I'll give serious consideration to any book he's narrating. In this one he reads the part of Martin, one of the four main characters, and is excellent as always; in fact all the readers helped convey their characters' personalities wonderfully well.

The premise of the story: four very different people all go to the top of a tall apartment building on New Year's Eve with the intent to jump off - but once they start to encounter each other their plans change. The story is told from the point of view of each of the four in turn, sometimes overlapping so we see the same events from several viewpoints and sometimes skipping a bit. It's a deft mix of humor and pathos (and bathos as well - oh, Martin!), with some unexpected twists, and I have to say that Hornby's got the knack of presenting a character that I want to strangle and yet find myself sympathizing with at the same time. Lovely book!

[There's a 2014 film adaptation, though I haven't seen it yet.]
