Strangers on a Train
2 journalers for this copy...
I got this softcover from a local Savers thrift shop for another release copy.
Highsmith's always good - in a twitchy, induce-vague-unease kind of way. I prefer the Ripley books (except for the last one, which seemed a bit strained), but this one's worth the time. It's about two men - one Guy, an architect with marital problems, the other Bruno, a playboy with serious psychological problems - who meet on a train and reveal some of their personal issues to each other. Bruno suggests that they could safely... um, remove the obstacles... to their respective happiness if they each murdered the other's "obstacle". No apparent motive, right? But while Guy's perhaps tempted, he isn't prepared for what happens when his wife IS murdered - and Bruno turns up encouraging Guy to fulfill his side of the "bargain"... [If you don't like watching people enmesh themselves in webs of deceit and/or danger, you should probably skip Highsmith. If you can take the nervous strain, though, she's wonderful!]
The classic 1951 film adaptation is well worth watching, and the basic plot has inspired a number of other works. The TV Tropes page on the film has some entertaining tidbits.
