Dreams of Joy

Shanghai...1957... birth father.... China.... what I gathered from the back cover
This is the sequel to The Shanghai Girls which I read a few years back, and I think a better book of the two.
First off, it's easy to say that Joy is a stronger character and a more interesting protagonist. Also, it gives me a glimpse of life in the Great Leap Forward. As a famine caused by the still-revered Mao's misguided ideals, at a time when the country was closed off to outsiders, unlike holocaust or the Nanking massacre, there's considerably less research, memoirs and literature about that tragic page in China's history. As always, Lisa See's books are well researched and give me a rare glimpse of the suffering of that period. Or rather, the suffering of the peasants. I naively didn't realize that the city folks would be enjoying life as usual. But then of course, that has always been the case throughout history.
This book stays in the box and I hope the next reader will enjoy it as much as I did.

I know Mom read Shanghai Girls, so maybe she'd like to read this one too!
