I knew nothing about the massacre of protesters in South Korea before picking up this book. The story is told really well, following the lives (and sometimes the deaths) of a small number of the protesters and the family members who can't trace their loved ones, jumping forward in time to show how they cope with the aftermath. There are some horrific descriptions of torture and unsurprisingly the trauma follows the victims through their lives. The analogy of the pyramid of violence with the military dictator at the top is a strong one, and the distrust and despair felt when people are capable of these 'human acts' echoes through the book. Although this is frequently a distressing read it's well worth it.

I can't believe this book has been with me for so long and I haven't journaled it ... ! I'm so sorry! Now I don't even remember how I got it :-D But I have read it and found it very interesting. A disturbing read in some ways but definitely worth the effort. My second book by this author, would definitely be interested in reading more by her.
