This is my favorite Kurt Vonnegut book. My dad (wonderfully warped as he is) had us listen to it as a book on tape on a car trip when I was 11 or so. I am going to offer it as a bookring, so PM me if you are interested.

Wow, I just got done reading the book. It is a nice quick read. Kurt Connegut is really creative isn't he? Do you think he had any drugs to fuel his creativity. Man o man.....
The book was alright. When I try to explain it to my friends I end up saying that you just need to read the book to understand. Not his best, but there are glimpses of his genius scattered throughout the pages.
The ending was pretty good. No auxillary character development, but then again, how can you develop when you are stuck in a chrono-synclastic infundibula......
Cheers!

Hmmm...where to start. I thought The Sirens of Titan was hilarious. It's been a while since I read anything by Vonnegut; I think the last novel of his I read was Hocus Pocus and I don't remember being particularly impressed by it. Titan was better. The writing style strongly reminded me of Douglas Adams, a good thing, because I think Adams is also a hilarious writer. I can't say that I agree with Vonnegut's philosophy about the meaning of life, but that is neither here nor there. The fact remains that The Sirens of Titan is an extremely imaginative and original novel, especially for the time when it was written. In fact, other than a very few dated references (the U.S.S.R., etc.) the story reads like it could have been written yesterday. That kind of enduring storytelling takes real talent. Bravo.

I am sending the book to buzzgirl in Ontario today.

I hadn't read anything in the 'science fiction' genre since I was a teenager, visiting England, reading the Hitchhikers Guide Series, on the recommendation of my cousin. I liked this book very much. I'd just finished a really heavy Barbara Gowdy book, so it was a good contrast. Thanks for passing it along and it's off to Ohio next!

Thanks sarajenni for sharing this book in a book ring. I have one ring to read before this one, so hopefully I'll start it soon!

Update on August 16, 2004:

I finished Sirens a few days ago, and it's hard for me to rate it, because it's the first Vonnegut book that I've ever read. I know that's practically blasphemous coming from a bibliophile. It kept me interested the whole way through, which is always a plus. I guess I'm unsure of what I think because it's a really weird story. But my boyfriend, who's more of a Vonnegut aficionado, said that all of Vonnegut is weird, that's part of the attraction. So I think I'll give it 7/10.

Thanks sarajenni for sharing this with me! I'm sending it today!
