From the back:

Most of us know that we are not the first people to turn the key in our front door, but we rarely get a chance to confront the shadows that linger in our homes. This is the biography of a house, an ordinary house that ordinary people have lived in since 1872. But start to explore what these people did, who they were, what they desired, and soon they become as remarkable, complicated and extraordinary as any character in fiction.

Julie Myerson set off on a quest to unearth the lives of the ex-residents of her home in London, and discovered a mass of outlandish and dramatic human stories. Abandoned children, bigamous marriages, tragic deaths and wheeler-dealer landlords all walked through the rooms of 34 Lillieshall Road. With their experiences Myerson has uncovered a century of lost history. It's gripping and heart-warming. And it could be your home's story too.

My review:
I've liked this book. Sometimes it was a bit difficult to keep track of all characters.
I like to read histories of things and also houses. I've thought about doing that for my house, but my house isn't that old and I know for a fact that the previous tenant lived here for 50 years at least. Maybe even longer. And that would be the entire lifespan of this house until now.

The book has arrived safely to Finland. Previous readers have not commented the plot, but the idea of a biography of a house is fascinating. I live in a house which was built in 1909 and all I know about my flat is that the writer Mika Waltari used to live in it as a wee boy. He slept in the same alcove as the maid, behind kitchen. I live alone, but I would definately need a maid.
Perhaps we should find out about the people who have lived in the house we are about to buy... My friend bought a small farm with a stable for six horses in peaceful countryside. No close neighbours. She loved the place and lived there a bit over three years, until she was brutally murdered by the son of the previous owner. He was on the run from a mental institution and came back "home" to kill his mother. Unfortunately mommie dearest had sold the place to my friend and had "forgotten" to mention this to his son. It took about two years to find a buyer for that house, because not surprisingly nobody wants a house with that kind of history, when the murderer is still alive and might some day be released.
My cousin lives in a flat where Russian general-governor Bobrikov used to live (he was shot and that triggered off a series of things which led to Finnish independence) and later our president Kyösti Kallio lived in it, too. Unfortunately the whole house was used as an office building for a few decades and then renovated heavily when changed back into living quorters, so I can't really imagine either Bobrikov or Kyösti Kallio in there, it is far too modern now. Except for the corridor leading to flats, it must be one of the prettiest in Helsinki.

For some reason I have two copies of this book which I haven't read yet, but this one gets a free ticked to Iceland next week, to put it on the move again.
