The title of this book intrigued me and I love reading about Southern women. Judging by the title and book flap I didn’t realize that this book wasn’t so light. Sissy marries PeeWee at 17 (1941) and life hasn’t been easy for her in Gentry, LA. Fast forward 15 years (1956) and three kids later and her high school sweetheart is back in town and it’s still there for both of them.
Each chapter starts with some rule of wisdom from Sissy’s Southern Belle Handbook. She breaks many of her own rules and revises them as life changes.
The Sissy/Parker storyline is pretty light and funny, but how she came to marry PeeWee has a dark side along with a cousin she didn’t know she had. Those storylines bring up some impactful truths of how women and people of color were treated at the time.
Book travel history: from The Traveler Restaurant in Union, CT - books & food how can you go wrong! This was my vacation read to Hampton Beach in 2018 so it seemed fitting it spent some more time in the area.
