A thrummingly good read.

From the back of the book:
"When a teenage quarrel in a small town of Heartsdale explodes into a deadly shoot-out, Sara Linton - paediatrician and medical examiner - finds herself entangled in a horrific tragedy. And what seems at first to be a terrible but indovodual catastrophe proves to have wider implications when the autopsy reveals evidence of log-term abuse and ritualistic self-mutilation. Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver start to investigated, but the children surrounding the victim close ranks. The families turn their backs. Then a young girl is abducted, and it becomes clear that the first death is linked to an even more brutal crime. And unless Sara and Jeffrey can uncover the deadly secrets the children hide, it's going to happen again..."

A gripping and chilling thriller. Police chief Jeffrey Tolliver shoots and kills 13 year old Jenny Weaver when she pulls a gun on a fellow teenager, Mark Patterson and threatens to kill him. At first her motive seems obvious but the autopsy throws up some surprising facts about Jenny and all of a sudden things are not as clear cut as they first seemed. It becomes clear that many of the people Jeffrey Tolliver thought he knew wear two faces and that Jenny's death is the culmination of a long chain of events going back 10 years. The book, like real life, does not have a neat resolution and forcefully brings home the fact that evil can wear a benign face - not all monsters look like monsters.
